福尔斯是英国文坛上的超重量级大师，生前曾是诺贝尔文学奖候选人。
他的第一部小说《收藏家》发表于1963年，一出版即大获成功，成为当年畅销书。1969年发表的作品《法国中尉的女人》荣获银笔奖和 W. H. 史密斯文学奖并被改编成电影，至今仍被诸多评论家和读者津津乐道。
