James A. Millward's study of the Qing dynasty's governance of Xinjiang is possibly the most careful study of the subject written since Owen Lattimore's studies of Central Asia. Taking on the Fairbankian idea of concentric rings of Chinese empire, Millward reminds us that the ways in which the Qing dynasty governed its far western regions was a Manchu policy, with distinct characteristics.
The treatment is topical, but does not lose sight of the chronological narrative. The study ends, however, before the Muslim rebellions in the region changed it forever, both in its ethnicity and demographics.
作者简介米華健（James A. Millward）：現為美國喬治城大學歷史系教授，專長領域為內陸歐亞大陸史與清代新疆史。美國「新清史」學派代表人物之一，代表作有Beyond the Pass: Economy, Ethnicity, and Empire in Qing Central Asia, 1759–1864（即本書的英文版）、Eurasian Crossroad: A History of Xinjiang（歐亞大陸的十字路口：新疆全史）等。
賈建飛：歷史學博士。曾任中國社會科學院副研究員，現為美國印第安納大學中央歐亞系博士候選人。主要研究近現代新疆歷史，尤其是清代新疆移民史及法制史。已出版《清乾嘉道時期新疆的內地移民社會》及《清代西北史地學研究》等。
