作者简介斯图尔特•休斯 (1916-1999)，出身于书香门第。美国著名历史学家。哈佛大学博士毕业后，执教于布朗大学。“二战”期间曾就职于中央情报局的前身—战略情报局。战争结束之后，先后执教于哈佛大学、加州大学圣地亚哥分校。著有《美国与意大利》《意识与社会：欧洲社会思想的转向》《欧洲现代史》等。
