马克·戈尔迪，英国历史学家，剑桥大学历史学高级讲师、丘吉尔学院研究员。他编著有大量的关于英国政治理论家约翰·洛克的著作。

罗伯特·沃克勒（1942-2006），英国历史学家、政治理论家，著名的启蒙运动研究专家，先后在牛津大学、曼彻斯特大学、剑桥大学、耶鲁大学等校任教。他著有《卢梭的社会思想》等多部学术著作。

本书由清华大学历史系刘北成教授领衔翻译，其他三位译者是大连理工大学马万利、重庆师范大学刘耀辉、东北师范大学唐科。
