The period in which we live is marked by increasingly frequent and intense cultural encounters of all kinds. However we react to it, the global trend towards mixing or hybridization is impossible to miss, from curry and chips – recently voted the favourite dish in Britain - to Thai saunas, Zen Judaism, Nigerian Kung Fu, "Bollywood" films or salsa or reggae music. Some people celebrate these phenomena, whilst others fear or condemn them. 作者简介彼得•伯克，英国文化史学家，剑桥大学伊曼纽尔学院荣誉教授，欧洲人文和自然科学院成员。毕业于牛津大学，1962至1979年任教于萨塞克斯大学欧洲研究学院。随后，他来到剑桥大学，从事文化史研究，并曾担任伊曼纽尔学院的图书管理员和档案管理员。他的研究方向为早期现代历史，强调文化史和社会史对现代问题的意义。主要著作有《文艺复兴》（1987）、《法国史学革命》（1990）、《历史学与社会理论》（1991）、《制造路易十四》（1992）、《什么是文化史》（2004）等。
