In this philosophy classic, which was first published in 1951, E. R. Dodds takes on the traditional view of Greek culture as a triumph of rationalism. Using the analytical tools of modern anthropology and psychology, Dodds asks, "Why should we attribute to the ancient Greeks an immunity from 'primitive' modes of thought which we do not find in any society open to our direct observation?" E.R.多兹（E. R. Dodds，1893—1979），爱尔兰古典学家。先后于贝尔法斯特坎贝尔学院和牛津大学接受教育。1936 年接替吉尔伯特·默里成为牛津大学钦定希腊语讲席教授，直至1960 年。代表作有《希腊人与非理性》（The Greeks and the Irrational，1951），以及《焦虑时代的异教徒和基督徒》（Pagan and Christian in an Age of Anxiety ，1965）。
